RESTORING FAIRNESS & DUE PROCESS
Between now and the general election, you will see 2-by-4-foot signs displaying the words “Restoring Fairness &Due Process.” Many of you have asked what those words mean.
After my administrative authority over Ajo Justice Court was transferred through Administrative Order 2025-207, I learned that there was no formal process through which I could appeal that decision.
Rather than give up, I worked with fellow elected Justices of the Peace and state legislators on House Bill 2976, titled “Justice courts; administration; due process.” The legislation sought to establish greater transparency and procedural protections when administrative actions affect elected Justices of the Peace and their courts. I did more than help develop the legislation—I testified before the Arizona Legislature while continuing to serve the people of Precinct 3.
For me, this was never about avoiding accountability. It was about a simple principle:
Allegations should be tested against evidence, and people affected by government decisions should have a meaningful opportunity to respond.
Although HB 2976 did not become law, it began an important public discussion about fairness, transparency, and accountability within Arizona’s judicial system.
This experience changed me. It strengthened my commitment to transparency, accountability, fairness, and due process—not only in the courtroom, but also within the institutions responsible for administering justice.
There is much more to this story, and someday I intend to tell it.
For now, my focus is on moving forward, strengthening Ajo Justice Court, and continuing to serve the community that entrusted me with this responsibility.
